By One Fine Gentleman

“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;

I have called you by name: you are Mine!”

(Isaiah 43:1b)

When I was somewhat a new Christian, I came to a point in my walk, when I began to question God’s love for me. I felt so wretched a person. I remember going on for a time, musing on this question, which led me to feeling a sort of despair. I wondered, “How could God possibly love me?” I asked Him that, “God, how could you possibly love me?”

About half a year later, a close relative asked my wife and I to attend an ecumenical service at the same church which we had been married in, and which God had led us to leave a couple years earlier. I should note that we had been somewhat estranged from this relative, due to our decision to leave that church. We felt it important to accept the invitation, in an attempt to mend some of the bridges that had been broken because of our decision.

We took our places in the pew, beside a rather large pillar. As we waited for the service to begin, I looked about at the familiar surroundings, recalling times past, and suddenly felt drawn to look upwards. As I looked at the splendid architecture, pillars and archways, I noticed a large banner hanging from a nearby pillar. On the banner were simply the words, “Because you are Mine”. Instantly, within my spirit, I remembered my question to God, and believed that He had, in that moment, in that place, answered me.

He loves me, not because of what I do, or don’t do, but because of who I am. I am His. From that day forward, whenever I had doubts, and questioned how God could love one as wretched as I, I remembered His words to me, “Because you are Mine”.

I have come to understand that there is nothing I can do that can make God love me more, and nothing I have done, that can make God love me less. “Because,” He says, “You are Mine.”

Today this gentleman continues to be in awe of God's love and is compelled to share this message of love with others. Together with his wife, he has the opportunity of touching many lives with the love of God by ministering with Teen Challenge, a 12 month residential faith-based drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre for men. They never cease to be blessed and amazed, as they watch the transforming power of God's love heal men of all ages and restore relationships between the men and their family members.
