God’s love and grace are amazing! God’s love is so great and such a core reality that God Himself defines love and is love (1 John 4:8). I stand in awe of God’s love that has given me salvation. God’s love has rescued me from the dominion of darkness and brought me into the Kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have been redeemed, and have the forgiveness of sin (Colossians 1:13).

Even though I know God’s incredible love and appreciate it greatly; even though I realize I have been gifted with the forgiveness of sin – there are times I find myself smack dab in the middle of the mire of sin. I have messed up. I have been ashamed to find myself duped by the devil, or even more embarrassing, lured away by my own wanton longings and bents. Do you also know this all too human reality? Even though you love God and know His love, have you ever found yourself dirtied and stained by your own sin?

In a low time in my life, I ended up deep in the mud of sin. I wanted to connect to my Abba Daddy God, but I thought I had blown it too much. I didn’t just feel covered in mud, I felt like spiritually I had soiled myself and that I was as disgusting as the excrement that covered me. The devil had me convinced God would reject me, see me as worthless and expose and mock my mess to everyone.

God gave me a beautiful picture of His love in that place. I saw a little girl dressed all in white, but her clothes weren’t so clean, they were stained with brown filth due to messing herself. She feared being in trouble with her father for disgusting poo was all over her outfit. To make things worse, there were people around and she was mortified of being exposed and reprimanded in front of them all. Despite fearing the worst, she ran to her father for

help. Instead of blowing up at her and making a scene by pointing out to all what she had done, the father took off his jacket and wrapped it around her to cover her shame. He then scooped her up into his arms and held her with loving protection as he took her to a quiet safe place where he could clean her up privately.

The goodness and grace of God’s love meets us in our mess, in our worst moments, in our mistakes and in our soiling sins. Love always protects and preserves (1 Corinthians 13:7). Take time today to thank God for the times His love has covered you, cared for you and cleaned you afresh. And if you are hiding today in the shame of your own mess, don’t stay there, don’t be afraid to come to God. Go now to the One who loves you! Let the Lord cover you with His love and cleanse you anew.

Love covers with grace, deals with things appropriately, it does not expose to mock. In Genesis 9:20-23 we read of how Shem and Japheth covered their father Noah in a loving and gracious way during his low moment. Who is God asking you to cover with love and grace this day?

Go into your day celebrating that God’s love has you covered!
